The UK government has a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% whilst also cutting energy use dramatically by 2050.

In the context of the UK housing stock the only way to achieve this is for a whole house retrofit strategy to be undertaken. This whole house strategy could range from simple loft insulation through to more significant measures such as external wall insulation.

When looking to thermally upgrade the external fabric of the property traditional insulation types could potentially mean adding 150mm of PUR insulation to the exterior of the property. This approach could be problematic where there are space limitations, also by adding such a thickness could cause issues with the eaves details, guttering, downpipes and window reveals.

By utilising Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) these issues could be overcome. With a thermal conductivity value of 0.007W/mK (aged design value) Vacuum Insulation Panels could offer up to a 5 times reduction in insulation thickness compared with a traditional PUR solution.

Due to the nature of Vacuum Insulation Panel technology the key to an external wall insulation system is how to fix the Vacuum Insulation Panels in place without fixing through them and thus puncturing them.

As the diagrams on the right show, a matrix of traditional insulation battens is first fixed in place to the exterior of the property. As the Vacuum Panels are a made to measure product so a specific panel configuration can be designed for any property. These battens create openings for the for the Vacuum Insulation Panels to sit within whilst a second layer of traditional insulation is laid over the top of the VIPs and fixed to the underlying battens. This second layer then offers protection to the Vacuum Insulation Panels as well as providing a base for the final finish of the property.
